Subject and object pronouns

Subject and object pronouns

Most simple sentences start with nouns or subject pronouns. In this lesson, we will learn more about pronouns, especially subject and object pronouns, and how to use them correctly.

What is a pronoun?

A pronoun is a word that replaces a noun, so the pronoun indicates a noun. It can refer to a person or a thing.

What are the types of pronouns?

There are six types of pronouns:

1- Subject pronouns

2- Object pronouns

3- Reflexive pronouns

4- Possessive pronouns

5- Demonstrative pronouns

6- Relative pronouns

Subject pronouns

We use them as replacements for proper and common nouns, and the pronoun is placed where a subject is in a sentence.

There are eight subject pronouns in the language:

I

First person/singular

You

Second person/singular

He

Third person/singular/male

She

Third person/singular/female

It

Third person/singular/inanimate

We

First person/plural

You

Second person/plural

They

Third person/plural

Examples:

I drink.

You eat.

He runs.

She jumps.

It rains.

We walk.

You sit.

They wait.

When using subject pronouns in a sentence, they became the subject of the sentence. The subject of a sentence can be one pronoun or more.

For example, He and she traveled last week.

Object pronouns

We use them as an object of a verb or a preposition in a sentence since they are replacements for nouns that come as an object in a sentence.

Object pronouns can come after a verb (walk) or a preposition (to).

There are eight object pronouns in ِEnglish:

Me

First person/singular

You

Second person/singular

Him

Third person/singular/male

Her

Third person/singular/female

It

Third person/singular/inanimate

You

First person/plural

Us

Second person/plural

Them

Third person/plural

Examples:

He played with me.

I saw you.

I answered him.

I went out with her.

I cleaned it.

He drew us.

I followed you.

I gave the book to them.
